Media With Purpose: Why Representation and Access in Storytelling Matters

Stories shape how we see the world. They influence what we believe is possible—and who we believe belongs.

That truth came into sharp focus during my conversation with Diane Strand on The Beyond Impact Podcast. Diane isn’t just creating content. She’s creating access. And in an industry that has historically excluded so many voices, that distinction matters.

“If people don’t see themselves represented,” Diane told me, “they start believing the story isn’t meant for them.”

Why Access Matters as Much as Representation

Representation on screen is important. But Diane argues that access behind the camera is just as critical. Who gets trained, hired, and trusted to tell stories determines what stories get told in the first place.

Throughout her career, Diane noticed how often talented individuals—especially people with disabilities and those from underserved communities—were shut out before they ever had a chance to begin.

That’s why her work focuses on opening doors at the earliest stages, creating real pathways into production, education, and media careers.

Changing the Industry From the Inside Out

Through JDS Creative Academy and her production work, Diane is proving that inclusion isn’t charity—it’s innovation.

When new voices enter the process, stories become richer, more authentic, and more reflective of the world we actually live in. Teams become more creative. Audiences feel seen.

“When you expand who gets to tell the story,” Diane said, “you expand the story itself.”

This isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about removing unnecessary barriers and recognizing talent wherever it exists.

Storytelling as Responsibility

As actors, creators, and leaders, we all play a role in shaping culture. Diane’s work is a reminder that storytelling isn’t just entertainment—it’s responsibility.

The stories we choose to tell, the voices we choose to elevate, and the access we choose to provide all send a message about whose experiences matter.

And when media is built with intention, it has the power to do more than entertain. It can empower.
